Frequently Asked Questions

Following are some questions that are frequently asked at our office:

What is Chiropractic?

Historically, the practice of setting bones and vertebra date back for thousands of years.  As a healing art, Chiropractic began 1895.  In Davenport, Iowa, a person named Daniel David Palmer examined his janitor, Harvey Lillard, who had become partially deaf while working in a cramped position.  He had heard something “pop” in his spine and lost hearing.  Upon examining his spine, D.D. Palmer palpated a vertebra that seemed out of position.  He repositioned the vertebra with his hands and Mr. Lillard’s hearing improved.  This new finding brought reasoning that misaligned bones in the spine interfere with the way the body functioned.  This discovery lead to the name of chiropractic by combining two Greek words, “cheir” and “praktikis”, meaning done by hand.  His son, Bartholomew Joshua (B.J.) Palmer developed the theory and art of chiropractic.  This became the basis for chiropractic practice today.

What do chiropractors do?

Chiropractors locate, analyze and adjust misaligned vertebra called vertebral subluxations.  Subluxation correction allows optimal function of the nerve system without structural interference.  This is very important for optimal expression of the body’s innate ability to heal and express its full potential.  Chiropractors do not treat symptoms or disease states.

What is a vertebral subluxation?

A vertebral subluxation is a misaligned vertebra within the spine that structurally interferes with brain function, to spinal cord function, to cell function.  Subluxations interfere with life expression of the nerve system. The nerve system controls, coordinates and adapts all function within the body.

What is a chiropractic adjustment?

A chiropractic adjustment is a specific force applied by hand or instrument by a chiropractor, to the spine to allow correction of vertebral subluxations. Chiropractors locate, analyze and safely correct vertebral subluxations.  The method that a chiropractor employs to adjust the spine is called a chiropractic technique.  There are many types of chiropractic techniques.

Do chiropractic adjustments hurt?

At our office, you will receive a tonal type of adjustment to your spine.  A tonal technique views the spine and nerve system as expressing a tone of balance. Life is best expressed when there is harmonious tone, when there is resonance throughout the body.  A tonal adjustment is a gentle, low force correction by hand, employed to allow correction of the vertebral subluxations and balance of the meninges.  This allows the nerve system to restore a normal tone to the body’s structural balance.  No strong manual force of correction is applied to the body. This type of adjustment is safe for all ages - from birth throughout a lifetime!  It is very effective for those who structurally require a more gentle corrective chiropractic technique.

What are the meninges?

Surrounding and protecting the brain and spinal cord are three membranes collectively called the meninges.  The external, tough, fibrous membrane is called the dura mater.  The second layer is called the arachnoid.  It is nonvascular, thin and loose membrane.  Underneath the arachnoid is the subarachnoid space filled with cerebrospinal fluid.  The innermost, the pia mater, is a thin layer of vascular connective tissue which intimately adheres to the nerve system.

How often do I need to be adjusted?

We recommend that you be adjusted and balanced as long as you want to express the best neurological integrity of your lifetime!  Your spine and nerve system can experience interference from physical, emotional and chemical causes on a daily basis. It is wise to maintain structural balance for the best adaptation possible. This is vitally important for the best expression of physical, mental and emotional well being.

At what age should someone receive chiropractic adjustments and balance of the meninges?

We recommend from birth through a lifetime!  The experience of birth may cause insult to the structural integrity of the baby’s skull and spine, insulting the function of the nerve system and causing vertebral subluxations from the first day of life. We all have injuries during the years of development and life that may cause vertebral subluxations and interference to the nerve system. It is recommended that each person be checked and adjusted, if necessary, for optimal neurological function throughout a lifetime. There are no trade-offs with your nerve system!
